Al Matthews
Al Matthews played in Green Bay
for six years after being selected in the second round
of the 1970 professional football draft. He later
played for the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco
49ers. He played college football at Texas A&I
University where he played on both offense and defense.
Al wasn't the largest football player in the NFL at
6 feet and 190 pounds playing weight, but many felt
he was one of the league's best strong safeties.
During the off-season of 1974, Matthews
went to the University of Texas at Austin and worked
as a volunteer assistant coach for his good friend,
Darrell Royal. He became the first black coach at
UT, and only the second black coach in the Southwest
Conference.
Al has been a strong supporter of
the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation and can be counted
upon to play in the Lone Star Classic golf tournament
every year.
